iRead: (16) An Abundance of Katherines.

An abundance of KatherinesAn abundance of Katherines by John Green.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars.

John Green is one of the few who’ve made me laugh and cry in one moment. Also, I’ve been laughing throughout the book, but for some reason, I burst out crying as I finished. Maybe because I didn’t want it to end, or maybe because I have never read something so beautiful.

I wonder how he came up with this brilliantly-constructed plot, how artistically he sculpted each character making such a hard-to-put-down book. I bet it wasn’t easy.

And it’s worthy to mention that this’s the first time I wasn’t offended by a Muslim character. Some aspects of Hassan’s beliefs weren’t so accurate as well as some of the Arabic, but still,I find the effort John Green put in this story very remarkable and impressive.

I loved every word, period.

The Girl In Orange: Chapter 2.

Here comes a new chapter of my latest short story, The Girl In Orange.

Any feedback you’re kind enough to offer would be appreciated.

Liebster Award!

I have long  given up on that sort of posts, but when it comes to a nomination from my sweet friend Nancy, I mustn’t  overlook it! 😉  So the rules say the following, and I’m quoting Nancy:

“In order to accept the nomination, I’ll be nominating 10 blogs of my own. Preferably blogs with less than 200 followers, so we can shake up traffic in those awesome, yet-to-be-discovered writers’ pages.

If I contacted you as one of the nominated bloggers, you will be required to do the following:

1. Link back and recognise the blogger who nominated you. Which is yours truly :D
2. Answer 10 questions I’ll be posting at the end of this post.
3. Nominate 10 other bloggers for the award. Come on, spread the love.
4. Create 10 questions for your nominees to answer (I know you’re catching up)
5. Notify your nominees!”

I am sorry that I’ll have to break the last 3 rules; it’s been a long while since I last browsed any blogs, so whoever reads this, consider yourself nominated! 😉

As per Nancy’s questions, here I go:

1. Tell us something about yourself that isn’t in your About page.

I refuse to believe that life is unfair. Unfair things do happen, but only because they’re meant to change you in a fair way.

2. What’s one thing you can call yourself good at?

Other than being a bookworm who loves to write? Umm, photography perhaps??

3. Something you are/were once obsessed with?

I’m an obsessive person, so the list is endless. I can randomly highlight my obsession with punctuation and grammar!

4. What is your most commonly used word?

“Mam mam ma”! Which technically is not a word at all, yet it’s what I voice to mock everything and everybody! Mocking is necessary for my well-being! 😛

5. What is the happiest you’ve ever been?

That’s a tricky question! One can’t easily isolate that distinct moment; all the moments you have lived are entangled together to spin your life. (Wise much??) 😛

6. What’s one thing you’ve always been curious about? Or wanting to try/learn?

A bunch of things; skydiving, scuba-diving, mountain climbing, surfing… The sort of things that flood you with adrenaline.

7. If you were writing a novel, what would be the names of the male and female protagonists?

LOL! I have like 4 works in progress, and haven’t yet settled on the names in any of them! When I get stuck , I refer to my characters as “Protagonist”, “Friend 1”, “Mother”, “Bad guy 1”, “Bad guy 2”, etc.

8. What, in your opinion, is the most interesting place in the world? And why?

Antarctica I guess! Maybe because I have never seen real snow in my entire life, and Antarctica is all about snow!

9. What is the most personal topic you’ve thought to/did blog about?

The story of my life, but I’m saving that until my plot gets more intriguing! 😉

10. If you could change one thing about your life, what would it be?

I’d definitely make myself less reluctant, if only we had a cure for procrastination!

A box of memories..

Source: Google images.

Papers and plastic bags have piled on the basement floor as she’s gone on the cleaning chore. She’s sitting there sorting out and labeling what needs recycling and what goes to the trash when an outworn small wooden box grasps her attention. Her fingers reach out to the rusty lock and manage to open the mystery box unveiling a cluster of photos amid other things she can’t make out. A chuckle flees her mouth at recalling the people lining in a photo she picked, memories of the old days float to the surface of her mind..

Back then, she was a typical fool; irresponsible and dreamy. She used to be aimless and clumsy, her priority was her looks and her worst nightmare was missing the prom. That day when she lined up with her friends taking photos was her sweet 16, look at how old she has grown!

Shuffling through the pics, warmth rush into her system as flickers of her old life sneak before her eyes. She bursts out laughing when the memory of the guy who lived next door nudges her, how on earth could she have a crush on a boy with that length of hair or that amount of smoke coming out of his mouth?! Back then she wasn’t aware that manhood isn’t measured with how “funky” one looks!

The squeak of the door behind her draws her back to reality and she turns to face the little girl standing at the doorstep. “Hunnie, what brought you down here? Have you finished your milk?” The girl nodded. “Bravo! Let’s make you a sandwich!”… The box of memories has to wait on the floor until the little girl is fed.

iRead: (4) Along Came a Spider..

Source: Goodreads.com

Another book I accidentally ran across, and it captured me since the very first page! Throughout the whole book, I had questions to think of and many possibilities to consider, and that was exactly what got me through the novel till the end.. I would’ve given it 5 stars if I haven’t got somehow bothered with few pages I had as a strict reader to skip, as well as James Patterson’s writing style;  unnecessary details such as colors and brands and way too many minor characters, maybe I get distracted easily after all..

Anyway, to cut it short, it was such an entertaining read; I even finished the book in 4 days which hasn’t happened in quite a few years!

“…psychopaths. This country is turning out more of them than any other place on the planet. They come in all shapes and sizes, all races and creeds and genders. That’s the scariest thing of all.” ~ Along Came a Spider by James Patterson.

Confessions of a semi-doctor: (6) Signs!

“A good doctor is a good observer.” Our professors keep saying! In fact, the effort a medical student exerts revolves mostly around obtaining that fine skill of watching. It’s all about scanning your patients for clues, and grasping threads that lead you to a close view of whatever illness they have.. Things referred to as “signs” in every medical book..

Source: Google images.

It’s confusing as you begin learning, for it ain’t that easy to “decode” those “signs”, analyze them and get a conclusion within few minutes, but eventually your eyes end up detecting random passers-by in the street!

The other day, I saw a slowly walking old man with shivering lips. I found myself subconsciously observing the tremors appearing in his hands, then “Parkinsonism” came on my mind! Today, I saw a man with a staring look and protruding eyes, I automatically shifted my gaze to his neck pulsations to find them pounding strongly, then “Thyrotoxicosis” gleamed in my head!!

I know it’s awkward, but if you found someone staring at you, don’t freak out, it might be a harmless doctor trying to figure out what you have! 😛 😛

iRead: (1) The Kite Runner, the few lines where I cried..

The Kite Runner, by Khaled Husseini is one of the few books that had really  touched my heart.. I don’t remember a chapter that hasn’t moved me into tears, but here’s my favorite part; where I really cried!

“… I bow to the west. Then I remember I haven’t prayed for over fifteen years. I have long forgotten the words. But it doesn’t matter, I will utter those few words I still remember: La illaha il Al-laah, Muhammad u rasul ullah. There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is His messenger. I see now that Baba was wrong, there is a God, there always has been. I see Him here, in the eyes of the people in this corridor of desperation. This is the real house of God, this is where those who have lost God will find Him, not the white masjid with its bright diamond lights and towering minarets. There is a God, there has to be, and now I will pray, I will pray that He will forgive that I have neglected Him all of these years, forgive that I have betrayed, lied, and sinned with impunity only to turn to Him now in my hour of need, I pray that he is as merciful, benevolent, and gracious as His book says He is. I bow to the west and kiss the ground and promise that I will do zakat, I will do namaz, I will fast during Ramadan and when Ramadan has passed I will go on fasting, I will commit to memory every last word of His holy book, and I will set on a pilgrimage to that sweltering city in the desert and bow before the Ka’bah too. I will do all of this and I will think of Him everyday from this day on if He only grants me this one wish: My hands are stained with Hassan’s blood; I pray God doesn’t let them get stained with the blood of his boy too.

I hear a whimpering and I realize it is mine, my lips are salty with the tears trickling down my face. I feel the eyes of everyone in this corridor on me and still I bow to the west. I pray. I pray that my sins have not caught up with me the way I’d always feared they would…”

Haunted.. Part III.

Her legs got fixed so did her eyes, her heart nearly jumped out of her chest and she let a loud gasp when she noticed what was looking at her from the mirror!!

A blurred figure of a woman was eyeing her.. Although it was unclear, she could tell what she was looking at.. That was certainly the “ghost”…

“Where’s my son? What have you done to him?”  Sobbed the shivering woman.

“What are you talking about darling? Asked the “ghost” with a stony wicked grin.

“Why did you kill him?”  She roared madly causing an overwhelming echo in the empty basement. But  the ghost replied with deafening giggles causing the pitiable woman to shiver a whole lot more..

“You’re pathetic indeed!!”  The ghost carried on giggling driving the woman to the point of boiling.. She couldn’t help but stand up striking the mirror aggressively before it swiftly slid aside uncovering what appeared to be a small hidden bathroom.. As she took her first steps inside, she had the same weird feeling, she had definitely seen that place before!! Flickers of those bizarre dreams she’d always seen came across her mind..

It was very cold.. The strange chemical odor that had snuck into her nose, was so strong that it made her cough… Feeling so dizzy, she headed to the basin hitting her face with the cold water.. She trembled when she raised her head up for the blurred figure was gazing  her again from the mirror above the basin..

“Why don’t you just KILL ME?!!”  She pleaded insanely, splashing the water all over the mirror.. Although she couldn’t hide the hatred locked inside her heart for that “ghost”, she had lost the interest in everything including her own life…

“You should’ve realized what’s going on. We’re on the same ship darling!” Said the figure with unexplained delight.

“Who the hell are you?!”  The woman was on the verge of collapse.

“Nothing but a lonely pathetic psychopath..”  Said the the ghost’s fainting voice before it disappeared..

The blurred figure in the mirror began to go clearer till she could recognize who she was looking at.. A  pale woman with dark ragged hair and hopeless eyes.. Her jaw dropped and her heart sunk for she was staring at her reflection in the mirror!!

For a moment, it sounded like a silly joke to her, but moments later, the secret was getting reviled; recollecting the missing pieces, she caught the whole story… The house, the basement and that hidden bathroom where she’d mixed those chemicals to attract the idiots stepping into the house at night looking for the “ghost” to the basement. She could recall how she’d trapped them in that hidden bathroom, how she’d loved that game and how it’d been addictive!! Yet, the truth was very awful, very ugly.. And she was too weak to handle that and too desperate as well to bother where the bodies had disappeared.. Her legs could no longer carry her, she knelt on the floor collapsing…

Hoping that it was just a nightmare she’d be awake from soon, she heard a familiar voice behind her. A voice that she couldn’t state whether it was real or just another part of that non-ending terror..

“I knew you’ll come search for me..” Said the voice..

As she turned back, she couldn’t tell whether that young man standing in front of her was truly her son or just another figure emerging from her sick mind.. She froze, staring blankly at him without uttering a single syllable..

“So this’s how you kill your boredom?? By trying to kill people??! GOD I thought you were getting better.. I should’ve cancelled my night shifts and stayed with you more!!”  He looked so blue, so disappointed and so upset..

“I’m sorry mom!”  He broke into tears. “You’re under arrest!”  He noticed that his mother wasn’t listening.. She felt the room spinning and it was slowly but surely getting darker till everything went black..

As darkness began to decline allowing the sunlight to quietly sneak in, people in the neighborhood including the sheriff witnessed the young cop whom they’d called a “Stubborn” holding  his sweet little “ghost” and stepping out of the no longer haunted house..

The end..

Haunted.. Part II.

Part I

I know that Part II looks very short, but this’s all what I could come up with so far.. Also i’m trying not to make it boring.. 🙂

Darkness had been enclosing the gloomy house  as she took her first steps inside.. The dusty floor muffled the sound of her steps making silence the one speaking out.. She went on stopping for few seconds allowing her eyes to cope, looking around and taking further watchful steps before stopping again..

She was scared of a ghost, despite the fact that she was the typical definition for the word “ghost”.. A tall pale figure with ragged dark hair covering a bony face. Hopeless eyes with a staring blank look and a slow, perhaps deadly, walk. No one would blame her for that “ghostly” look. The woman couldn’t get over her husband’s death, then losing her son later brought her into a blind end…

Strolling inside, she had no idea where to search.. She let her instinct lead her to some worn-out stairs that took her down to what seemed to be the basement. The scene down there wasn’t quite freaky, yet it did freak her out!

No trace for a being she found while her eyes scanned the not quite empty basement.. The longer her eyes moved in there, the more scared she felt. Although she’d never been there, the  place  looked somehow familiar!! Fear flooded her heart the moment she remembered that she knows that place… She wandered in there several times… In her dreams.. And had always wondered why her subconscious kept taking her to such place…

She kept scanning the basement till her eyes met an outsized mirror she knew. She gazed deeply as if the mirror was going to answer all the questions puzzling her.. She was so absorbed in that she didn’t notice that shadow moving behind her back. She knew she had a company when she heard a faint voice saying:

I knew you’ll come sooner or later.. Welcome darling!!“…

Her legs got fixed so did her eyes…Her heart nearly jumped out of her chest and she let a loud gasp when she noticed what was looking at her from the mirror!!

To be continued…
